Nondestructive testing is a testing method that examines the surface and internal quality of inspected components without damaging the workpiece or the raw material in its service condition. The objectives of nondestructive testing are to improve manufacturing processes, reduce manufacturing costs, enhance product reliability, and ensure the safe operation of equipment.
Nondestructive testing is a testing method that examines the surface and internal quality of inspected components without causing any damage to the workpiece or the raw material in its service condition. The objectives of nondestructive testing are to improve manufacturing processes, reduce manufacturing costs, enhance product reliability, and ensure the safe operation of equipment.
Nondestructive testing is widely used across many critical industries worldwide. Any industry that relies on large-scale physical equipment or infrastructure is likely to employ some form of nondestructive testing. In the automotive sector, to prevent material failures on the road, manufacturers must inspect vehicle components for cracks and defects, issues arising from improper heat treatment, and unacceptable material mix-ups. On railways, inspections must be carried out for fire Vehicle wheels, axles, brakes, and hydraulic systems, as well as rail risers and storage tanks, require regular safety inspections, particularly storage tanks that hold hazardous materials. In the oil and gas industry, nondestructive testing equipment is essential for accident prevention, with continuous inspection of welds, pipelines, risers, storage tanks, and large forgings. Large power plants maintain zero-tolerance for failures and impose stringent testing requirements, especially nuclear power plants.
X-ray inspection is one of the most common nondestructive testing methods, widely used in manufacturing sectors such as castings, pressure vessels, and automotive components to detect defects including weld seams, porosity, cracks, blowholes, inclusions, and corrosion. Its greatest advantage lies in the fact that the inspection results are intuitive, easy to store, and fully traceable. Because nondestructive testing is inherently nondestructive, it allows for 100% comprehensive inspection of the test object when necessary—something that destructive testing cannot achieve. Moreover, nondestructive testing can be applied not only to raw materials used in manufacturing and to each intermediate process step, but also to the final product itself. Comprehensive, all-round inspections can also be conducted on equipment in service, enabling non-stop, non-shutdown inspections and thereby reducing costs for enterprises.
Computed tomography (CT) imaging is an advanced X-ray nondestructive testing technique that is widely used for more precise NDT applications. CT technology leverages the varying attenuation coefficients of X-rays as they pass through materials and employs computational algorithms to reconstruct cross-sectional images. It can visualize the structural and compositional distribution in each tomographic slice, thereby overcoming the image overlap and blurring inherent in conventional X-ray inspection. Moreover, CT scanning enables the accurate detection of defect sizes within a certain range.
For complex, precision castings, the inspection images obtained using two-dimensional X-ray nondestructive testing equipment may exhibit partial occlusion of certain structural features, thereby compromising the accuracy of the inspection results. CT imaging can meet multifunctional inspection requirements in 3D, 2.5D, and 2D modes; complex structures can be fully visualized in three-dimensional images, and the software automatically identifies defect location and size, thereby further enhancing the accuracy of nondestructive testing.
