Nondestructive testing is the examination of castings to detect surface or internal defects without causing any damage to the material; it is also referred to as nondestructive flaw detection. Numerous testing methods are available for nondestructive flaw detection, with the following four being widely used in production: magnetic particle inspection, ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, and liquid penetrant testing.

1. Magnetic Particle Testing
When ferromagnetic materials such as steel are subjected to a strong electric current or placed in a magnetic field, they become magnetized. At surface defects—such as cracks and inclusions—magnetic flux lines have difficulty penetrating; instead, they are forced to bypass these defects, leaking out near the surface and thereby forming localized magnetic poles.
2. Ultrasonic Testing
In a broad sense, ultrasonic flaw detection refers to the method of using ultrasonic vibrations to identify defects in materials or workpieces. Depending on the modulation technique, ultrasonic vibrations may be continuous—producing continuous waves—or pulsed—producing pulse waves. Although the underlying operating principles are broadly similar, the inspection methods differ; ultrasonic flaw detection can be categorized into three techniques: the transmission method, the resonance method, and the reflection method.
3. Radiographic Testing
The method of radiographic or fluoroscopic inspection using X-rays and gamma rays to detect macroscopic defects in finished or semi-finished products is known as radiographic testing. X-rays and gamma rays can penetrate materials that are opaque to visible light; moreover, they induce photochemical reactions, ionization, and fluorescence in certain substances. Furthermore, the intensity of all these effects increases with the intensity of the radiation.
4. Liquid Penetrant Testing
This is a method for detecting surface defects. It involves applying a penetrant to the cleaned surface of the workpiece, allowing it to seep into open defects; the excess penetrant on the surface is then removed, followed by the application of a developer. Due to capillary action, the developer draws out the residual penetrant from the defects, thereby revealing the defects.
