Nuclear Accidents Stem from Complacency in Nuclear Safety: WeiCheng Testing Conducts 2022 Radiological Source Accident Emergency Drill To further enhance our employees’ understanding of radiological sources and their ability to respond quickly and appropriately, handle emergencies effectively, and coordinate operations when a radiological source accident occurs; to test and improve the collaborative capabilities of command personnel; to clarify the division of responsibilities among departments; and to elevate our company’s emergency response and rescue capabilities—ensuring that, in the event of an emergency, we can carry out swift and efficient emergency management, minimize the impact of any incident, and verify the scientific soundness, practicality, and operability of our radiological source emergency plan—thereby truly safeguarding the safe use of radioactive sources, we have organized this radiological source accident emergency drill in accordance with Luoyang WeiCheng’s annual emergency drill schedule for the year. On April 25, the company held the 2022 Radiological Source Accident Emergency Drill at the factory premises. The drill was chaired by Liu Feifei, head of the company’s Engineering Department, and all employees were present to observe the exercise. At 4:50 p.m., all staff arrived punctually at the designated area within the factory and attentively listened to Manager Liu Feifei’s briefing on radiological sources and the procedures for handling radiological source emergencies. Manager Liu provided on-site explanations, demonstrations, and emergency response protocols for every type of radiological source incident that could occur during work. Under the professional guidance of the on-site team, the entire operation proceeded in an orderly and well-organized manner. Radiological Source Detachment—The emergency response team dons protective suits and covers the source with lead shielding; based on the alarm threshold settings, they determine the source’s location. Radiological Source Detachment—The emergency response team is equipped with dosimeters, wears protective gear, and employs three protective measures—time, distance, and shielding—to minimize individual radiation exposure as much as possible, using lead shields to block the exposure tube. Radiological Source Detachment—The emergency response team is equipped with dosimeters, wears protective gear, and uses long-handled pliers to grasp the drive wire. Radiological Source Detachment—The emergency response team is equipped with dosimeters, wears protective gear, and swiftly places the detached radiological source into the storage container. Radiological Source Detachment—The radiation technology team uses a radiation survey meter to monitor the dose levels inside the storage container, confirming that the radiological source has been safely retrieved. Damage to the Source Guide Tube—During operations, improper placement of the source guide tube by workers can result in external impact, causing the tube to fracture or collapse and preventing the radiological source from being promptly retracted into the source machine. Damage to the Source Guide Tube—Emergency responders must wear protective equipment, carry radiation detectors, and use lead shields or lead bags to shield the exposure tube (at this point, the radiological source remains in the exposure tube). Damage to the Source Guide Tube—A plastic sheet is laid flat on the ground, and a grinding wheel is used to cut off both ends of the deformed section of the guide tube. First, the drive wire is retracted, the quick-connect fitting and the screws above the connecting claw are removed, and the radiological source machine is placed on the plastic sheet. Damage to the Source Guide Tube—Using pliers, the drive wire inside the source delivery tube is grasped and fed into the storage container. Damage to the Source Guide Tube—On-site dose measurements are taken and recorded, concluding the emergency response. At each step, the team handled the situation correctly, and the other employees participating in the drill watched intently. Manager Liu’s insightful explanations and the operators’ professional execution created a vivid, immersive experience. Manager Liu patiently explained the basic knowledge about radiological sources and the precautions that must be observed during routine operations. As the drill was drawing to a close, participants took advantage of the final moments to share real-world radiological source emergencies they had encountered or might encounter in the future with their colleagues, jointly analyzing the causes, discussing remedial measures, learning from one another, and striving for continuous improvement. The various emergency scenarios encountered during this drill closely mirror the real-life situations we may face in our daily work; however, no one adopted a passive or perfunctory attitude simply because it was an exercise. Everyone approached the drill with utmost seriousness. The focus of the drill was to ensure that everyone knows how to respond correctly when an accident occurs, with particular emphasis on the key steps: evacuation—reporting—establishing a perimeter—response—and ensuring that the site is thoroughly cleaned after the response to prevent debris from falling onto the radiological source and complicating subsequent handling. In safety work, it is better to be prepared and not need it than to need it and not be prepared. With this, the 2022 Radiological Source Accident Emergency Drill of Luoyang WeiCheng Engineering Testing Co., Ltd. has come to a successful conclusion.

Nuclear accidents stem from complacency; nuclear safety stems from vigilance.

Weicheng Testing’s 2022 Annual Emergency Response Drill for Radioactive Source Accidents

In order to further enhance our employees’ understanding of radioactive sources, as well as their ability to respond quickly and appropriately, handle emergencies effectively, and coordinate operations in the event of a sudden radioactive-source incident; to test and improve the collaborative capabilities of command personnel; to clarify the division of responsibilities among departments; to elevate our company’s emergency rescue capabilities so that we can respond swiftly and efficiently to emergencies, minimize the impact of accidents, and verify the scientific soundness, practicality, and operability of our radioactive-source emergency response plan—thereby effectively ensuring the safe use of radioactive sources—we are hereby organizing this radioactive-source accident emergency drill in accordance with Luoyang Weicheng’s annual emergency-drill schedule.

On April 25, the company conducted the 2022 Radiological Source Accident Emergency Drill at the factory. The drill was chaired by Liu Feifei, head of the company’s Engineering Department, and was observed on-site by all employees.

At 4:50 p.m., all employees arrived on time at the designated area of the factory and attentively listened to Manager Liu Feifei’s briefing on radioactive sources and the emergency response plan for radiological incidents. Manager Liu provided on-site explanations, demonstrations, and practical guidance on how to handle each type of radiological emergency that could occur during work. Under the expert supervision and hands-on instruction of qualified personnel, the entire exercise proceeded in an orderly and well-organized manner.

Radioactive source has become detached. - The emergency response team dons protective suits and covers the source with lead shielding, then determines the source’s location based on changes in the alarm threshold readings.

At every step, they handled the procedures flawlessly, and the other employees participating in the drill watched intently. Manager Liu’s insightful briefing and the operators’ professional execution created a vivid, immersive experience for everyone.

Manager Liu patiently explained to everyone the basic knowledge related to radioactive sources and the precautions that must be observed during daily operations.

As the exercise was drawing to a close, participants took advantage of the final moments to share with their colleagues the radiological source emergencies they had encountered in the past or that might potentially occur, jointly analyzing the root causes and exploring response strategies, thereby learning from one another and advancing together.

All the unexpected situations encountered during this exercise are realistic scenarios that we may face in our future work. However, no one adopted a passive or perfunctory attitude simply because it was an exercise; instead, everyone approached it with utmost seriousness. The focus of the exercise was to ensure that each participant understands the correct procedures for handling accidents, with particular emphasis on the key steps: evacuation—reporting—establishing perimeter security—and on-site response. During the response process, the area must be thoroughly cleared to prevent radioactive sources from falling and scattering debris, which could complicate subsequent operations. In safety management, it is better to be over-prepared than under-prepared—better to have resources ready but not need them than to need them and find oneself unprepared. With this, the 2022 Radiological Source Accident Emergency Response Drill conducted by Luoyang Weicheng Engineering Testing Co., Ltd. has been successfully concluded.
