With social development and the continuous improvement of construction technology, ultra-high-rise buildings and multi-level underground structures—which enable more efficient utilization of land resources—have become the primary direction of development. Tower cranes, as indispensable vertical transportation equipment in construction, play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of excavation support and basement construction. As the supporting strut system for tower crane foundations, the quality of lattice columns is of paramount importance. Lattice columns typically have cross-sections designed from angle steel or steel plates, configured as either bi-axially symmetric or uniaxially symmetric sections. The structural members of a lattice column system consist of web members and bracing elements; the web members primarily resist axial forces, while the bracing elements mainly counteract lateral forces. With societal development and advancements in construction technology, ultra-high-rise buildings and multi-level underground structures—which enable more efficient utilization of land resources—have become the primary direction of development. Tower cranes, as indispensable vertical transportation equipment in construction, play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of excavation support and basement construction. As the supporting strut system for tower crane foundations, the quality of lattice columns is of paramount importance.

The cross-section of a lattice column is typically composed of angle steel or steel plates, configured as either doubly symmetric or singly symmetric about the principal axes. A lattice column assembly consists of web members and bracing elements; the web members primarily resist axial forces, while the bracing elements mainly resist lateral forces. Based on the structural characteristics of lattice columns, arranging the cross-sectional area of the material farther from the principal axis of inertia can, under the same axial load-carrying capacity, enhance the flexural performance of the member and reduce material consumption. Owing to these advantages, lattice columns are commonly used for frame columns in industrial buildings, as well as for independent columns and foundation frame columns of tower cranes.

In actual production, the welded joints of lattice columns often undergo welding distortion and residual stresses due to thermal expansion and contraction. Given that welding is a highly precise process that requires both stringent quality assurance and minimal distortion, nondestructive testing of lattice columns becomes particularly critical.

I. Causes of Welding Deformation in Lattice Columns

Welding of lattice columns is a localized heating process, and during welding the heat distribution is often uneven and incomplete. When welding is performed under adverse conditions such as high ambient temperature or strong winds, the temperature of the weld bead and the surrounding material rises, while welds located farther from the heat source may experience insufficient or no heating, resulting in lower temperatures. This differential thermal expansion and contraction during welding leads to the formation of transverse and longitudinal shrinkage patterns on the weld surface, which, when superimposed in multiple directions, ultimately causes distortion of the lattice column. Moreover, because the heated area cannot be precisely controlled during the heating process, welding-induced distortion is unavoidable in the fabrication of lattice columns.

II. Nondestructive Testing of Weld Quality for Grid Columns

1. Ultrasonic Nondestructive Testing Technology for the Welding Process of Lattice Columns
Ultrasonic nondestructive testing is the most widely used NDT technique for assessing the weld quality of lattice columns, as it operates on the principle that ultrasonic waves propagate at different speeds in different media.

Once welding defects occur during the fabrication of lattice columns, the structural stability of the columns can be compromised. By employing ultrasonic nondestructive testing to assess the quality of lattice column welds, it is possible to identify the specific types, locations, and sizes of defects that arise during the welding process. This information enables relevant personnel to promptly implement corrective measures, thereby ensuring the quality of the welds and guaranteeing the structural stability and serviceability of the lattice columns.

2. Radiographic Nondestructive Testing Techniques for the Welding Process of Grid Columns

Radiographic nondestructive testing can also be employed in the quality inspection of lattice column welds. This technique enables comprehensive examination of internal defects within the lattice column, thereby ensuring the integrity of the weld quality.

Different thicknesses of lattice columns absorb varying amounts of radiation over the same exposure time. By conducting an in-depth analysis of the radiation energy absorbed by the weld surfaces of lattice columns and performing a comparative analysis, it is possible to pinpoint the locations of welding defects and to determine their specific nature and surface area.

The application of radiographic nondestructive testing in the welding process of lattice columns enhances the overall performance of lattice column welded structures. This approach not only enables timely and accurate identification of defect locations but also ensures the service life of these structures, promptly eliminates potential safety hazards during their operation, and thereby guarantees their operational effectiveness.

The scientific and rational application of nondestructive testing techniques for the weld quality of lattice columns can, to a certain extent, define the service limits of welded components and enhance the compressive strength and load-carrying capacity of lattice-column welded structures.

From the analysis of the nondestructive testing techniques for the weld quality of lattice columns presented above, it can be seen that different NDT methods have distinct detection mechanisms and varying levels of effectiveness. In practical inspection procedures, the optimal welding process for lattice columns should be determined, and all welding operations must be carried out in strict accordance with the established procedure. Moreover, the restraining forces during the welding process should be increased to effectively minimize the likelihood of deformation, thereby ensuring the overall weld quality. At the same time, the selection of an appropriate inspection method can effectively facilitate the smooth execution of the welding work, laying a solid foundation for nondestructive testing of lattice column welds and guaranteeing high-quality results.
