In recent years, TOFD nondestructive testing has become a hot topic in Western countries and has been vigorously promoted and applied, to the point where it is increasingly regarded as on par with radiographic testing. Given the current trajectory of TOFD technology development and adoption, coupled with the growing expertise of NDT personnel in this field, it is widely believed that TOFD has strong potential to eventually replace radiographic testing—a technique that carries certain inherent risks and demands stringent protective measures. At present, however, TOFD equipment and applications remain relatively scarce in China, and many people’s understanding of it is still limited to its use in inspecting thick-walled pressure vessels. Today, I will guide you through the fundamentals of TOFD nondestructive testing and highlight its key advantages.
I. TOFD is the “cutting-edge, high-tech” method in nondestructive testing.
Nondestructive testing is an indispensable and effective tool for industrial development, to a certain extent reflecting a country’s level of industrial advancement; the importance of nondestructive testing has been widely recognized.
TOFD nondestructive testing was initially applied to the inspection of nuclear industrial equipment and is now widely used for thick-walled vessels and pipelines in industries such as nuclear power, construction, chemical engineering, petrochemicals, and long-distance pipeline systems. Moreover, the cost of TOFD nondestructive testing is only one-tenth that of pulse-echo techniques.
II. Application Areas of TOFD in China
With the successful completion of the nation’s first RBPC steel bridge deck pavement rehabilitation project for a cable-stayed bridge spanning a river, the project’s technological innovations have attracted widespread attention. In particular, the outstanding performance of TOFD nondestructive testing in routine bridge maintenance and inspection as well as in rehabilitation projects has consistently earned high praise from the industry.
The Runyang Bridge, construction of which began in 2000 and officially opened to traffic in April 2005, was at the time the “largest cable-stayed bridge in China and the third-largest in the world” in terms of main-span length. It also stands as the largest modern composite bridge completed during the Tenth Five-Year Plan period in China, playing a crucial role in enhancing the overall traffic efficiency of the national trunk road network and accelerating the implementation of the regional urban economic integration strategy. In terms of inspection and monitoring technologies, the groundbreaking application of TOFD nondestructive testing has enabled continuous, all-weather dynamic assessment of the pavement structure’s condition, making it one of the key highlights for further promotion and wider adoption of RBPC steel-deck construction technology.
III. Using the Olympus ultrasonic flaw detector as an example, this section discusses the advantages of TOFD nondestructive testing technology and its role in bridge maintenance.
First, Olympus is one of the world’s leading brands in precision technology and nondestructive testing, with several cutting-edge NDT instruments that prominently feature TOFD technology, including the EPOCH 650 digital ultrasonic flaw detector, the OmniScan MX2 ultrasonic flaw detector, and the Dual Matrix Array (DMA) phased-array probe. These products consistently set industry benchmarks in flaw detection performance, portability, and ease of use. As a result, they offer a wide range of advantages:
Advantage 1: Excellent reliability and high accuracy
By leveraging wave diffraction signals, the detection rate of defects remains high regardless of the sound beam angle. In routine bridge inspections, this approach enables the identification of defects and issues in various components—such as pier columns, cable stays, and the bridge deck—thereby minimizing hidden safety risks.
Advantage 2: The testing process is convenient and fast.
TOFD inspections can typically be performed by a single inspector, with the probe simply moved along both sides of the weld. This significantly reduces both the time and cost associated with bridge inspection and routine maintenance.
Advantage 3: Clear and reliable TOFD inspection images
Compared with the A-scan signals previously used, the TOFD inspection images generated in this retrofit project are more conducive to defect identification and analysis, enabling the development of targeted solutions and facilitating timely bridge maintenance.
Advantage Four: Strong Signal Recording Capability
TOFD nondestructive testing employs high-performance digital instruments with robust signal-recording capabilities, enabling full-process acquisition of inspection signals. Moreover, the acquired inspection data can be stored long-term and subjected to subsequent processing, thereby providing comprehensive documentation that supports bridge safety maintenance and the wider adoption of bridge-deck construction technologies.
In addition to inspection, TOFD nondestructive testing can also be used for monitoring defect evolution, with particularly high accuracy in measuring the vertical propagation of cracks. This rehabilitation project has effectively extended the service life of the bridge deck system and represents a bold innovation and courageous practice in addressing the global technical challenge of full-life-cycle maintenance for long-span steel bridge decks. Looking ahead, Olympus will continue to fulfill its corporate social responsibility by collaborating with all stakeholders to further promote the application of TOFD nondestructive testing in bridge construction and maintenance, to further advance RBPC steel bridge deck construction technology, and to continue contributing to China’s bridge-building industry.
In summary, given the outstanding inspection performance of TOFD technology, it is indeed worthy of further promotion and application across various industries in China.
