Product Description

Castings are widely used in numerous fields—including machinery, construction, shipbuilding, aerospace, automotive, and locomotive manufacturing—due to their many inherent advantages. In several critical applications, nondestructive testing of the internal quality of castings is indispensable. Common nondestructive testing techniques for assessing casting quality include liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, eddy current testing, radiographic testing, and ultrasonic testing. Liquid penetrant testing is employed to detect various surface-opening defects in castings, such as surface cracks and surface porosity—defects that are often difficult to identify with the naked eye. Eddy current testing is suitable for detecting subsurface defects generally no deeper than 6–7 mm. A major limitation of eddy current testing is its inability to provide a direct visual representation of defect size and shape; it typically only determines the location and depth of the defect on the surface. Furthermore, its sensitivity for detecting small surface-opening defects is lower than that of liquid penetrant testing. Magnetic particle testing is well suited for detecting surface defects and subsurface defects up to a few millimeters deep in ferromagnetic materials. For internal defects, radiographic testing and ultrasonic testing are the most commonly used nondestructive methods. Radiographic testing provides intuitive images that reveal the type, shape, size, and distribution of internal defects; however, for large castings with substantial wall thicknesses, ultrasonic testing is highly effective, enabling relatively precise determination of the location, equivalent size, and spatial distribution of internal defects.
