Penetrant testing is widely used for the detection of surface-opening defects in non-porous materials, such as metals, ceramics, and plastics, and can comprehensively inspect even complexly shaped defects in a single pass. It is primarily employed to detect cracks, white spots, porosity, and inclusions, among other defects. No additional equipment is required; during field inspections, portable, canned penetrant testing kits are commonly used, which consist of three components—penetrant, developer, and cleaning agent—making them convenient for on-site application.
Penetrant Testing with Coloring
After the workpiece surface is coated with a penetrant containing a coloring dye, capillary action causes the penetrant to seep into surface-opening defects over a specified period. Excess penetrant on the surface is then removed, the workpiece is dried, and an adsorbing medium—known as a developer—is applied. Again by capillary action, the developer draws the penetrant from the defects, causing it to migrate back into the developer layer. Under visible light, the penetrant traces in the defects become brightly red, thereby revealing the defect’s morphology and distribution.
