Industrial nondestructive testing employs methods such as ultrasonic, radiographic, electromagnetic, and penetrant testing to evaluate the condition of inspected objects—such as compliance with standards or remaining service life—without causing damage or compromising their operational performance. It is an indispensable means of ensuring product quality. Ultrasonic nondestructive testing boasts advantages such as portable equipment, simple operation, and highly accurate results, making it poised to become the fastest-growing method in the nondestructive testing market. China is a major global manufacturer of machinery and a leading country in industrial nondestructive testing. The state’s emphasis on product and equipment quality as well as workplace and public safety continues to rise, and demand for industrial nondestructive testing equipment in China is expected to grow steadily in the future. At the same time, with the launch and advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative, infrastructure development—including transportation—in countries along the Belt and Road is expanding, which is anticipated to drive even greater growth in the international nondestructive testing equipment market. I. Major Trends in the Nondestructive Testing Industry Modern manufacturing faces “four highs”—high temperature, high pressure, high stress, and high speed—placing increasingly stringent demands on workpieces and equipment. In the future, industrial nondestructive testing equipment, while continuing to meet basic NDT requirements, will evolve toward greater specialization of testing equipment, higher levels of automation, integration of ultrasonic imaging with information technology, and convergence of multimodal testing technologies, thereby fostering the healthy and rapid development of modern manufacturing. 1. Increasing Demand for Specialized Testing Equipment Industrial nondestructive testing equipment is widely used; however, in different application fields, the inherent material properties of the test object, the location and severity of defects, as well as the object’s geometry and operating environment, all vary. Moreover, as phased-array ultrasonic systems become more prevalent, inspection methods for complex components and defect evaluation techniques are becoming increasingly specialized, and industry standards and testing procedures are growing more diverse and sophisticated. Consequently, it is becoming ever more important to provide customers with tailored, comprehensive, specialized NDT solutions that include testing equipment, transducer wedges, scanning devices, and analysis and measurement software. In the future, NDT equipment will gradually shift from general-purpose models toward dedicated solutions that address the diverse testing needs of specific industries. 2. Rising Automation in Testing Equipment Industrial nondestructive testing often takes place in harsh environments, requiring personnel to work at heights, in areas containing toxic or hazardous substances, or in flammable and explosive settings. Current testing operations are predominantly manual, leading to low efficiency, poor repeatability, reduced worker safety, and high labor intensity. In certain fixed settings, such as manufacturers of steel plates, pipes, and billets, online automated testing systems have already been widely adopted to replace manual inspection, significantly improving both testing efficiency and quality. Therefore, replacing manual inspection with automated systems represents a key development direction for the industrial NDT industry. 3. Integration of Ultrasonic Imaging with Information Technology and Intelligent Systems Phased-array and total-focusing ultrasonic technologies utilize multi-element transducers to transmit and receive ultrasonic waves, offering controllable beam angles, full-matrix data acquisition, and dynamic focusing. These capabilities enable high-speed, omnidirectional imaging of internal defects in complex structures. The Internet of Things, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence represent major trends in information technology development. By integrating 4G/5G and other communication technologies, equipment can transmit real-time status and sensor data to cloud servers, facilitating efficient, comprehensive, and accurate assessments of equipment conditions and trend analysis. The integration of ultrasonic imaging with information technology and intelligent systems is thus a critical trend in the evolution of ultrasonic NDT. 4. Convergence of Multimodal Testing Technologies Different NDT techniques each have their own strengths and limitations—for example, radiographic testing is highly sensitive to volumetric defects within materials, while ultrasonic testing excels at detecting area-based defects. Consequently, multiple techniques are typically employed simultaneously during inspections. Integrating several NDT methods into a single piece of equipment and conducting comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the results from each technique can effectively enhance both accuracy and efficiency. This complementary, multimodal approach, where the strengths of various techniques reinforce one another, is a key technological trend for the future of the NDT industry. II. Opportunities in the Nondestructive Testing Industry 1. Sustained National Economic Growth and Strong Policy Support In May 2015, China released “Made in China 2025,” which explicitly states: “Support joint research efforts among government, industry, academia, research institutions, and end-users to develop smart products and independently controllable intelligent devices and bring them to industrial scale”; “Organize and implement a number of innovation and industrialization projects and major initiatives, including large aircraft, aero-engines and gas turbines, civil space programs, smart green trains, energy-efficient and new-energy vehicles, marine engineering equipment and high-tech ships, complete sets of smart grid equipment, high-end CNC machine tools, nuclear power equipment, and advanced medical diagnostic equipment.” The metallic, nonmetallic, and composite materials used in these priority products and major equipment require nondestructive testing throughout manufacturing, welding, and under demanding operating conditions to detect internal damage, thereby preventing catastrophic accidents, casualties, and property losses caused by equipment failure. According to the “NDT Development Roadmap” compiled by the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers, after implementing nondestructive testing, value-added rates across industries are approximately 5% for mechanical products, 12%–18% for defense, aerospace, and nuclear products, and around 20% for rockets. Thus, as China’s aerospace, marine, nuclear energy and nuclear industry, high-speed rail, and other defense-related and high-tech sectors continue to develop comprehensively, nondestructive testing technology will serve as a powerful support for various manufacturing industries and cutting-edge technological advancements. 2. Accelerating Import Substitution According to the “NDT Development Roadmap” compiled by the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers, after implementing nondestructive testing, value-added rates across industries are approximately 5% for mechanical products, 12%–18% for defense, aerospace, and nuclear products, and around 20% for rockets. Therefore, as China’s aerospace, marine, nuclear energy and nuclear industry, high-speed rail, and other defense-related and high-tech sectors continue to develop comprehensively, nondestructive testing technology will become a strong pillar supporting the development of various manufacturing industries and advanced technologies. Although high-end NDT products in China are currently dominated by imported firms, ongoing improvements in domestic companies’ research on fundamental NDT theory, technological development, instrument design, and manufacturing, coupled with the state’s increasing emphasis on achieving independent control over critical instrumentation and equipment, suggest that import substitution will gradually become one of the key market trends for China’s NDT industry in the future. III. Favorable Environmental Policies The “14th Five-Year Plan for Intelligent Manufacturing Development” calls for the R&D of digital, non-contact precision measurement, online NDT, laser tracking measurement, and other intelligent testing equipment and instruments. The “Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development and the Vision for 2035” highlights strategic emerging industries such as next-generation information technology, biotechnology, new energy, new materials, high-end equipment, new-energy vehicles, green environmental protection, as well as aerospace and marine equipment, urging accelerated innovation and application of key core technologies, enhanced capacity for factor assurance, and the cultivation and expansion of new drivers for industrial development. As the state introduces policies to encourage the construction of new infrastructure and the upgrading of manufacturing toward high-end production, the continuous emergence of new materials, new structures, and new processes will further stimulate demand for industrial NDT equipment, thereby promoting ongoing technological innovation within the industry. I. Image of Pressure Marks 1. What is the surface manifestation of pressure marks? Pressure marks are characterized by a density significantly lower than that of the surrounding areas. 2. What causes them? Localized, severe mechanical stress on a particular area of the film prior to exposure. 3. When might these phenomena occur? The primary cause of pressure marks lies in improper handling of the film during darkroom preparation. During processing, a specific area of the film may become compressed (clamped) within the dark bag. Objects falling onto the dark bag can also produce pressure marks. 4. How can pressure marks be identified? Carefully prepare another darkroom film from the same package, expose and develop it; if no defects similar to those observed the first time are found, the spots seen initially are very likely pressure marks. 5. How can pressure marks be prevented? Strictly adhere to darkroom operating procedures, handle the film with care at all times, and avoid applying any kind of pressure to it. II. Image of Post-Exposure Creases 1. What is the surface manifestation of creases (post-exposure)? Creases are characterized by black crescent-shaped marks with higher density than the adjacent film areas (greater optical density). 2. What causes post-exposure creases? Over-bending or forceful bending of the film during or after exposure, or during processing, will result in creases. 3. When might these phenomena occur? Post-exposure creases typically arise when the film is improperly handled during removal from the dark bag or when loading it into the developing tray. 4. How can post-exposure creases be detected? Expose several films, then deliberately roll or twist them, develop them, and examine the negatives under reflected light; you may observe one or more crescent-shaped black marks. 5. How can post-exposure creases be avoided? Strictly follow darkroom operating procedures, handle the film with care at all times, and especially avoid applying any pressure to the film with your fingers. III. Pre-Exposure Creases 1. What is the surface manifestation of creases? Pre-exposure creases are characterized by white crescent-shaped marks with lower density than the surrounding film areas (lower optical density). 2. What causes them? Excessive or abrupt bending of the film before exposure can lead to this type of crease. 3. When might these phenomena occur? They usually appear when the film is improperly handled upon removal from the package or when being loaded into the dark bag prior to exposure. 4. How can pre-exposure creases be identified? Deliberately roll or twist certain films, expose them, and then develop them as usual. Upon examination, you may find fainter-colored creases in areas where the film was mishandled. 5. How can they be avoided? Strictly adhere to darkroom operating procedures, handle the film with care at all times, and especially avoid applying any pressure to the film with your fingers. IV. Fixer Stains 1. What is their surface manifestation? Stains caused by fixer solution appear as small white circular spots with lower density than the surrounding film areas. 2. What causes them? Even trace amounts of fixer solution splashed before development can lead to the formation of white spots. 3. When might these phenomena occur? Whenever chemical contamination is present, this phenomenon may occur. It most often results from improper darkroom layout or careless processing. 4. How can they be avoided? Ensure that the film-handling area is safe, dry, and clean, and prevent fixer solution from splashing onto the film. V. Developer Stains 1. What is their surface manifestation? Stains caused by developer solution also appear as small circular spots, but with higher optical density than the surrounding film areas. 2. What causes them? Touching the film or developer solution splashing onto it before rinsing can lead to this type of stain. 3. When might these phenomena occur? Improper darkroom layout or careless processing can both result in such stains. 4. How can they be avoided? Prevent any chemical solutions from splashing, and ensure that the film-loading area is completely dry. VI. Intensifying Screen Marks 1. What is their surface manifestation? Intensifying screen marks appear as a dark line on the negative; they may also manifest as white spots on the negative. 2. What causes them? Dark lines are caused by deep abrasions on the lead foil intensifying screen, while bright spots result from flaky impurities on the lead foil intensifying screen. 3. When might these phenomena occur? When the lead foil intensifying screen suffers some degree of abrasion or damage, you will see scratches on it; if impurities get trapped on the surface, this phenomenon will also occur. 4. How can marks on the lead foil intensifying screen be detected? Carefully inspect the lead foil intensifying screen up close; if any damage is found, it must be replaced. If it is unclear whether damage has occurred, replace the suspected lead foil intensifying screen with a new one and then test using film. 5. How can they be avoided? First, avoid scratching the lead foil intensifying screen and keep the working area clean at all times. In addition, if possible, use film packaged in lead-sealed containers. VII. Paper Interference Marks 1. What is their surface manifestation? Paper interference marks appear as a low-density area that nearly covers the entire film. 2. What causes them? If a sheet of paper is interposed between the film and the lead foil intensifying screen and casts a shadow, paper interference marks will appear. 3. When might these phenomena occur? This happens if the backing paper is not removed. 4. How can paper interference marks be detected? Simply perform exposure tests both with and without the backing paper. 5. How can they be avoided? Ensure that all backing paper is removed before exposure. VIII. Edge Bite Images IX. Electrostatic Exposure Spots 1. What is the surface manifestation of electrostatic exposure spots? Electrostatic exposure spots are characterized by jagged, branching black lines or irregular, densely packed small black dots. 2. What causes electrostatic exposure spots? The dispersal of static electric charges leads to electrostatic exposure spots. 3. When do electrostatic exposure spots occur? The most common cause is rapidly removing the film from the package in relatively low-humidity (dry) conditions. 4. How can electrostatic exposure spots be detected? If you walk slowly or run your hands through your hair before handling the film, you may sometimes see or hear static discharge. If you notice jagged lines or black spots on the developed film, it is highly likely that electrostatic exposure spots have appeared. 5. How can they be avoided?
